Wiley's art is as colorful, captivating and varied as the artist herself. Born of European, Mexican and Cherokee descent, Wiley grew up in Coyoacan, Mexico, the city where Diego Rivera and Frieda Kahlo lived and painted. Wiley received formal training at the Parsons School of Design, but she credits the start of her career to her grandmother: fellow artist Martha Gottfried. The inspiration for Wiley's work springs from a variety of places--from the mystical and mythological experimental films of Maya Daren, to the far-reaching expanses of Carlos Castaneda's writing, to meditation and self-discipline. Wiley's dreamlike figures, romantic settings, bold texturing and decisive detailing are all signature characteristics of her work that converge to produce imagery as seductive as it is contemplative. Painting with acrylics and oils, she uses various materials, including silk, handmade papers, wax, gold leaf and stencils, to create her magical works. The rich layers of Wiley's art tell a story that explores mythology, symbolism and lost cultures.Wiley currently resides in the American Southwest. She harbors a variety of personal interests in addition to her artwork, including music and environmental causes. This is my way of preserving beauty that has been forgotten in our modern culture. I am interested in preserving the spirit of each age, weaving stories of hope and possibility in each painting and taking viewers into their own personal investigation about what their life's purpose is. This is my obsession: to paint in the traditions of the classically trained masters."COPYRIGHT 2009 Summit Business Media COPYRIGHT 2009 Gale, Cengage Learning

Welcome to Southwood Middle School, Center for the Arts. Southwood offers a number of excellent programs designed to meet the many needs of all “Southwood Superstars.” We are proud of our designation as a nationally recognized magnet school of excellence for the visual and performing arts. We are also extremely proud to be designated as an “A” school for the 9h consecutive year. The key to our success is high standards, both in academics and behavior, for our students. Students and parents are enthusiastically encouraged to become involved, and participate in all that Southwood has to offer. Our school employs the middle school philosophy which organizes students by teams. Teams are designed with 6-7 teachers and approximately 150 students who have these teachers in common. These teachers collaborate with one another on activities, lessons and assignments that reinforce concepts focusing on the Sunshine State Standards as set by the state of Florida. Another advantage of the team approach is that parents are able to gain a holistic view of their child’s academic progress by meeting with the entire team of teachers during parent conferences. Communication, cooperation and collaboration among all stakeholders are key components to maintaining our climate of success here at Southwood and we are excited about partnering with you as we endeavor to do just throughout the 2009– 2010 school year! RRMoton Elementary, Miami, Performing Arts, Mr. Lushine, 1982 MIAMI - Miami-Dade County Public Schools was recently awarded a four-year, $1.2 million grant from the United States Department of Education (USDOE) for funding under the Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination (AEMDD) Program. The purpose of this program is to develop, document, evaluate, and disseminate an effective and replicable standards-based, arts-integration program that improves elementary student achievement. The project, HeARTS & Minds, will be implemented at Robert Russa Moton Elementary School, a pre-K through 5th grade school located in West Perrine. The project design contains five fundamental components: standards-based, arts-integrated curricula that incorporate object-based and project-based learning strategies; collaborative planning and teaching between classroom teachers, the four arts specialists (dance, music, theatre, visual arts) at the school, and visiting artists; literature as a springboard for arts-integrated units of study; extended learning experiences to cultural institutions, performances, and literary venues, and ongoing professional development in arts-integration with artists and experts in the field. Currently an audition-based, studio arts magnet program for selected students, R. R. Moton will convert to a school-wide, arts-integrated program for all students to participate. Interested students who reside outside the school’s attendance boundary will need to apply. Applications will be accepted October 1st through January 15th and may be obtained at R. R. Moton Elementary School, 18050 Homestead Avenue, Miami, Florida 33157, online at http://www.miamimagnets.org, or by contacting the School Choice & Parental Options office at 305-995-1922.
